The 2-Day Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is an adventure designed for those who want to experience the essence of the Inca Trail without undertaking a very long trek. From Cusco, the journey begins early, heading to kilometer 104, where the trail starts and takes us along ancient Inca paths, mountain landscapes, and the impressive site of Wiñayhuayna. During the route, you can enjoy incredible views of the Urubamba Valley and, at the end of the day, you will reach the Sun Gate (Intipunku), which offers a first unforgettable view of Machu Picchu. After this experience, you will rest in a cozy hotel in Aguas Calientes.

The next day, you will leisurely visit the citadel of Machu Picchu, discovering its temples, terraces, and constructions that still hold the mystery of the Incas. Our guide will accompany you to learn about its history and the secrets that make this place one of the wonders of the world. Afterwards, you will have free time to enjoy the town or visit the market before returning on a panoramic train to Cusco. It is a short, comfortable, and very special experience, perfect for those seeking to connect with the history and energy of the Andes.

Summary

The 2-Day Inca Trail is a shorter and more accessible version of the ancestral route to Machu Picchu, ideal for travelers who want to experience the essence of Inca trekking without committing to several full days on the trail. This journey combines nature, history, and remarkable landscapes in a format perfect for those with limited time.

During this tour, you will begin your hike from an iconic section of the traditional trail and walk along preserved segments of the ancient Inca path, surrounded by mountains, cloud forests, and archaeological remains. The experience includes a peaceful overnight stay in a natural setting before continuing the hike the following day. The trek culminates with arrival at Sun Gate, where the first panoramic view of Machu Picchu creates one of the most memorable moments of the journey.

This option is an excellent choice for travelers seeking an authentic trekking experience, enjoying the legacy of the Inca civilization and the beauty of the Andean landscape without the physical demands of a longer multi-day trek.

Itinerary

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Km. 104 – Wiñayhuayna – Aguas Calientes

Our Short Inca Trail experience begins early with pickup from your hotel in Cusco (around 4:00 a.m.). The journey from Cusco to the train station takes approximately one and a half hours.

Once aboard the train, you will enjoy a beautiful journey alongside the Urubamba River until you reach kilometer 104, the starting point of the Short Inca Trail. Before beginning the hike, we will pause to enjoy a hearty breakfast. Don’t forget to bring your original passport, as it will be required at the trail entry checkpoint.

We will begin the adventure by visiting Chachabamba, the first archaeological site of the day. From there, we will begin an uphill hike of approximately 4 hours to Wiñaywayna, one of the most spectacular sites along the entire route. We will have time to explore its terraces, take photos, and enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by nature.

With our energy renewed, we will continue to the Sun Gate (Intipunku), where you will get your first view of Machu Picchu. The late afternoon light illuminates the citadel, creating a magical scene ideal for capturing unique photos without the midday crowds.

We will then descend for about 30 minutes to the citadel itself, where we will tour Circuit 1, which offers unparalleled panoramic views of Machu Picchu. After the tour, we will take the bus to Aguas Calientes, where a delicious dinner at a local restaurant and a night’s rest await you at a 3-star hotel, with a private room, hot shower, and a charming view of the Andean landscape.

  • Hiking Distance: 13 km / 8 mi
  • Duration: 7 hours
  • Maximum Altitude: 2,700 m / 8,858 ft (Sun Gate)
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner
  • Accommodation: 3-star hotel
  • Difficulty: Moderate

Day 2: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu Sanctuary – Cusco

This day is entirely dedicated to discovering Machu Picchu, the majestic Lost City of the Incas. We will start early with a delicious breakfast at the hotel, then take one of the first buses to the sanctuary entrance. If the weather permits, you can enjoy the sunrise over the mountains as the Inca citadel is gradually revealed through the mist.

We will take a guided tour of circuit 3, lasting approximately 2 to 3 hours, exploring the most iconic places: temples, palaces, ceremonial plazas, agricultural terraces, and aqueducts. Our guide will share the history, architecture, and mysteries that make Machu Picchu one of the most impressive wonders of the world.

After the tour, we will return to the town of Aguas Calientes. You will have free time for lunch, to explore the town, or visit the local market. In the afternoon, we will board the panoramic train (Vistadome or 360°), and then continue by bus to Cusco, where our team will be waiting to take you to your hotel. Arrival in Cusco is scheduled for around 7:30 p.m.

Recommendations

  • Bring ID or passport
  • Light backpack
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Trekking shoes
  • Sunscreen
  • Power bank
  • Camera
  • Personal items
  • Insect repellent

To get the most out of your Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, it’s key to pack only the essentials. Wear comfortable clothing in layers—the weather in the Sacred Valley and Aguas Calientes changes quickly: cold at dawn, strong sun at midday, and cool in the evening. A pair of trekking shoes with good grip is essential, especially for the climb from Km 104 to Wiñay Wayna and the hike to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku).

Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat: the Andean sun is strong, even when it’s cold. If you travel between December and March (rainy season), bring a light poncho or raincoat—drizzles often occur in the afternoon. Although this trek to Machu Picchu is shorter than the classic 4-day one, it still requires being prepared.

Carry a reusable water bottle (you can refill it at safe points), energy snacks like dried fruit or bars, and a basic kit with your usual medicines. There are pharmacies in Aguas Calientes, but it’s better not to rely on them during the hike. A portable charger is also a good idea: even though you sleep in a hotel with electricity, you won’t have access to outlets while walking.

Very important! Bring your original National ID if you are Peruvian or your valid passport if you are a foreigner. They are mandatory for boarding the train, entering the Inca Trail, and accessing Machu Picchu. If you’ve already booked your tour from Cusco, rest easy: the package includes transport, tickets, guide, meals, and hotel accommodation (not camping).

Useful Information for Your Trip

The Short Inca Trail takes place between 2,050 and 2,700 meters above sea level, mainly in the Urubamba River valley (also called Vilcanota in this area). This is why it’s less demanding than the 4-day route, but even so, some people might feel mild soroche (altitude sickness). The ideal is to arrive in Cusco at least one day before, hydrate well, rest, and try coca tea—an Andean tradition that helps with acclimatization.

The weather in Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes is mild during the day but gets quite chilly at night. In winter (May to September) it’s colder, so don’t forget a warm jacket. In summer (December to March) it can rain in the afternoons, so a light raincoat is always a good idea.

On the first day, you take the train from Ollantaytambo to Km 104, not to Chachabamba (although the archaeological site is near the starting point). During the journey, you will enjoy one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world: the Urubamba River winding between mountains, agricultural terraces, and snow-capped peaks.

Your tour includes a 2 to 3-hour guided tour of Machu Picchu on the second day. By sanctuary rules, you cannot enter without a guide, so all our groups are accompanied by a specialist in Inca history. If you want to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, it’s possible, but requires advance reservation and has limited space.

This Short Inca Trail is ideal for those seeking

The authentic experience—original Inca trails, archaeological sites like Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna, and that first magical view from Inti Punku—without walking for several consecutive days. There are no hanging bridges or camping, but there is history, nature, and excitement at every step.

Groups are small (maximum 10 people) to guarantee personalized attention, a good pace, and time for photos at key points: Wiñay Wayna, the Sun Gate, and, of course, Machu Picchu.

Everything is included: transfers from Cusco, train, tickets, certified guides, meals, and one night in a hotel in Aguas Calientes. You don’t need to worry about anything: just walk, look, and let yourself be amazed. Whether you travel alone, as a couple, or with family, this tour from Cusco combines adventure, culture, and comfort into an unforgettable experience. If you’re looking for a short, all-inclusive Cusco trekking experience, this is your trip.

FAQ

What is the difference between the Short Inca Trail and the Classic 4-Day Inca Trail?

The Short Inca Trail lasts only 2 days and covers approximately 13 km, ideal for those who don’t have much time or prefer a lighter hike. The Classic Inca Trail, on the other hand, lasts 4 days and includes several campsites and more mountain sections. In both cases, you arrive at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Intipunku).

Is it necessary to book the Short Inca Trail in advance?

Yes, it is recommended to do so at least 2 or 3 months in advance, especially during the high season (from May to September). Spaces are limited per day and are strictly controlled by the Peruvian government, just like on the Long Inca Trail.

Do I need a special permit to do the Short Inca Trail?

Yes. All travelers must have an official permit issued by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture. Top Inka Travel takes care of processing it, which is why it’s important to send your details and valid passport at the time of booking.

What is the difficulty level of the Short Inca Trail?

The route is of moderate difficulty, with some uphill sections, but accessible to people in good physical condition. No prior trekking experience is needed. The most demanding hikes are between Chachabamba and Wiñaywayna, but the pace is relaxed and includes breaks.

Where do you sleep during the Short Inca Trail?

Unlike the 4-Day Inca Trail (which includes camping), this tour offers accommodation in a 3-star hotel in Aguas Calientes, with a private room, bathroom, and hot water. It’s ideal for those looking for comfort after the hike.

What type of train is used during the tour?

The tour includes the Vistadome or 360° train (subject to availability), with large panoramic windows to enjoy the landscape of the Sacred Valley. If you wish for greater comfort, you can request an upgrade to the Vistadome train, with wider seats and premium service.

What should I bring on the 2-Day Short Inca Trail?

Bring your original passport, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, a rain poncho, water, snacks, and a camera. It is also advisable to bring light clothing for the day and warm layers for the evening in Aguas Calientes.

Are there restrooms or services along the route?

Yes, there are basic services at the checkpoint at kilometer 104 and at Wiñaywayna. However, for much of the hike, there are no restrooms available, so it is recommended to plan accordingly before starting the route.

Can I visit Machu Picchu the next day if I already have an entrance ticket?

Yes. The tour’s second day includes the guided visit to Machu Picchu, but if you wish to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, you must request it in advance, as they require separate tickets and have limited capacity.

What happens if it rains during the Short Inca Trail?

The tour proceeds as scheduled, even during the rainy season (November to March). It is important to bring a waterproof poncho and non-slip footwear. The rains are usually brief and do not prevent you from enjoying the trek.

Is it possible to do the Short Inca Trail with children or elderly people?

Yes, provided they are in good health and physical condition. The hiking pace is adapted to the group, and the guides are trained to provide support throughout the journey. It is recommended for children over 8 years old.

What does the 2-Day Short Inca Trail Tour with Top Inka Travel include?

It includes transport from Cusco, train ticket, entrance fees to the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu, professional guide, breakfast, box lunch, dinner, accommodation in Aguas Calientes, and return to Cusco. It does not include lunch on the second day or tips.
