Q’eswachaka Bridge – The Last Handwoven Inca Bridge

Spanning the Apurímac River in Quehue (3,700 masl), the Q’eswachaka Bridge is the world’s only remaining Inca bridge handwoven from ichu grass, renewed every June by the communities of Quehue, Huinchiri, Perccaro, and Choccayhua. This Q’eswachaka tour lets you cross it with local guides on a safe and respectful itinerary. You’ll learn about the ancestral Q’eswachaka ritual, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, bridging past and present while connecting the physical and spiritual worlds in the Andean cosmology.

The 4 Lagoons – Journey Through Sacred Landscapes

The journey continues to the four lagoons of Cusco (3,800-4,000 masl): Pomacanchi, Acopia, Asnaqocha, and Pampamarca (Tungasuca). Their waters reflect shades of blue, green, and silver, surrounded by apus, the sacred Quechua mountains. You’ll walk at a leisurely pace, observe Andean birds, and potentially chat with local shepherds. Your guides will share stories about water spirits, making this Cusco full day tour a profound connection with Andean nature and culture.

Itinerary

Itinerary

Tour schedule: 4:30 AM – 5:00 PM

This adventure begins with pickup from your hotel at approximately 4:30 a.m., heading to the district of Cusipata, our first stop, where we will enjoy a delicious breakfast.

Continuing the journey, we will stop at the Combapata Viewpoint, from where we will have a view of the colonial Inca bridge of Checacupe, which is quite different from the bridge we will visit later. We will then arrive at the town of Yanaoca to visit the Pabellones Volcano and the nearby mountain pass of the same name.

We will continue for another hour until we reach the district of Quehue, where the famous Inca bridge “Qeswachaka” is located (at 3,600 meters above sea level). Here, we will have the opportunity to visit this ancestral hanging Inca bridge built over the majestic Apurímac River. This is the last remaining Inca bridge made from plant fiber (ichu or straw), which deteriorates due to the highland climate and thus requires annual maintenance. The bridge is completely rebuilt each June by the local communities of Perccaro, Huinchi, and Quehue.

Next, we’ll continue the circuit of the four lagoons: Pomacanchi Lagoon, Acopia Lagoon, Asnaqocha Lagoon, and Pampamarca or Tungasuca Lagoon, where we will observe a great variety of regional flora and fauna, stunning landscapes, and experience the richness of Andean culture.

At the end of the circuit, we will return to Cusipata to enjoy a delicious lunch. After lunch, we will head back to the city of Cusco, arriving at approximately 5:00 p.m.

Useful Information for Your Trip

The Q’eswachaka tour covers 120 km southeast of Cusco, reaching altitudes of 3,700-4,000 meters. Spend at least one night in Cusco (3,400 m) before the trip to acclimatize to the altitude and avoid soroche (altitude sickness).

We pick up from hotels in Cusco’s historic center (near Plaza de Armas or San Blas). If your accommodation is far, the meeting point is Plaza de Armas. We will confirm the exact time one day before. The round-trip vehicle journey takes 3-4 hours each way, depending on weather and road conditions.

For the altitude and Andean sun, bring sunscreen, a hat, and water. At Top Inka Travel, we include coca tea and portable oxygen if needed.
