Discover Pabellones Volcano: The Smallest Volcano in the World in Cusco, Peru

Can you imagine visiting a volcano so small it looks like a hill, but with a crater that tells ancient stories? That’s Pabellones Volcano! Located in the community of Pabellones, in the district of Pampamarca, province of Canas, Cusco, this little giant is a hidden gem that will surprise you. Standing just 8 meters tall with a diameter of 4 meters, it is considered the smallest volcano in the world. Come along and discover this unique place, perfect for the whole family!

Where is Pabellones Volcano?

Pabellones Volcano is located in the heart of the Peruvian Andes, in the community of Pabellones, within the district of Pampamarca, in the province of Canas, Cusco. It is near the route connecting Cusco and Puno, in an area surrounded by stunning Andean landscapes, crystal-clear lagoons, and the famous Inca bridge of Qeswachaka. Unlike large active volcanoes, this one is inactive, making it safe and perfect to explore worry-free.

Why is it so special?

  • Unique size: At just 8 meters high, it’s a volcano you can walk around in minutes. Its small crater will make you feel like you’re in another world.
  • Nature and culture: Around the volcano, you’ll find views of lagoons like Pampamarca, Asnacocha, Acopía, and Pomacanchi, as well as Quechua communities that preserve ancestral traditions.
  • Accessible adventure: It’s ideal for children, young people, and seniors, as it doesn’t require long hikes or special equipment. You just need curiosity and a camera!

How to get to Pabellones Volcano?

Getting to Pabellones Volcano is a straightforward adventure but requires a bit of planning. Here’s how to get there from Cusco:

From Cusco to Combapata:

  • Take a bus or minivan from Cusco to Combapata, a town in the province of Canchis. The trip takes about 2.5 hours via highway PE-3S (around 140 km).
  • Buses depart from Cusco’s terrestrial terminal or city transport points. The cost is affordable, between 10 and 20 soles per person.

From Combapata to Yanaoca:

  • In Combapata, look for colectivos (shared taxis or minivans) heading to Yanaoca, in the province of Canas. This leg takes about 30–40 minutes and costs between 5 and 10 soles.
  • Make sure to ask the driver if they pass near the community of Pabellones, as some colectivos may detour.

From Yanaoca to Pabellones:

  • From Yanaoca, you can take another colectivo or a private taxi to the community of Pabellones, in the district of Pampamarca. This stretch is short, about 15–20 minutes, but the roads are more rural, so a local guide or GPS can be helpful.
  • Pabellones Volcano is near highway CU-1672, accessible via a secondary road called Calle Hipólit.

Tip: If you prefer comfort, hire a private tour from Cusco that includes Pabellones Volcano and the Qeswachaka Bridge. Many local agencies offer this combined route with nearby lagoons.

What to do at Pabellones Volcano?

  • Explore the crater: Get up close to the small crater and marvel at its shape. It’s perfect for unique photos.
  • Enjoy the landscape: The area is surrounded by lagoons and Andean mountains, ideal for a picnic or short hike.
  • Learn about local culture: The community of Pabellones is Quechua, and the locals are friendly and often share stories about the volcano and their traditions.
  • Combine with Qeswachaka: Take the opportunity to visit the Inca bridge of Qeswachaka, just a few kilometers away—a marvel of engineering made of plant fiber that is renewed every year.

Tips for your visit

  • Clothing and gear: Wear comfortable clothes, walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and bring water. Although the volcano is at about 3,500 meters above sea level, it’s not a high-altitude area, but the Andean sun can be strong.
  • Best time to visit: Go between May and October (dry season) to enjoy clear weather and good road conditions.
  • TransportationColectivos are affordable but can fill up quickly. Arrive early in Combapata (before 10 a.m.) to secure a seat.
  • Local guide: If you don’t speak Quechua or fluent Spanish, consider hiring a guide in Yanaoca or Combapata for a more complete experience.
  • Camera ready: The Andean landscape and the volcano are perfect for photos, especially at sunset.
